Learning Centers
The Healthy Behaviors Initiative has created Healthy Behaviors Learning Centers at afterschool sites across California to help programs increase the healthy eating and physical activity of their students, staff and families. The Centers—having successfully incorporated the Initiative’s Guide to Exemplary Practices in Nutrition, Physical Activity and Food Security—serve as models for hundreds of other afterschool programs on how to instill healthy habits in their students. They do this by hosting site visits and providing free coaching, resources and tools that are practical, effective and easy-to-integrate into your program.
By visiting a Learning Center, you can experience programs in action and take away ideas, free resources and critical knowledge to easily build into your program and achieve the same successful and measurable results. These tools will help your program become more intentional, and make nutrition and physical activity part of your core program, as part of a holistic approach that changes attitudes and behaviors. Connect with programs that will help you put into action approaches and tools included in the Initiative’s Changing Lives, Saving Lives: A Step by Step Guide to Developing Exemplary Practices in Healthy Eating, Physical Activity and Food Security in Afterschool Programs that:
- Establish program policies that promote healthy eating and physical activity by your staff, students and families
- Engage students in exciting and meaningful activities
- Build partnerships with existing nutrition and physical activity organizations that can help your program be successful and sustainable
- Improve food in your program while increasing family access to healthy food outside program hours
- Create and empower student leaders
