Developing Exemplary Practices in Nutrition, Physical Activity and Food Security in Afterschool Programs
The Exemplary Practices guide is designed to help program directors, leadership team members, site directors and their partners—in an intentional and systematic way—strengthen their programs to help students develop healthy lifestyle habits. Six practices were developed based on research, practical experience and consultation with a stakeholder group of experts, and through work with an ongoing, statewide learning community of 10 afterschool programs that already had strong nutrition education and/or physical activity programs. The guide explains the key elements of each of the six practices and provides indicators for programs to use in establishing baselines and tracking progress in each of the six practices. Programs are encouraged to focus on one or two high priority areas at a time and then to assess progress at three- and six-month intervals. Download the complete guide.
